Genesis: The Fall of Eden
Benedict Cumberbatch is a long-time fan of the semi-biographical novels of Edward St. Aubyn, and he makes good on his wish to play alcoholic, drug-addled Patrick Melrose with the performance of a career in the TV drama of the year.
Tracking Melrose’s life from the death of his father in the early 1980s to the mid-2000s via flashbacks to his traumatic childhood, David Nicholls’ script – boiling down five novels into an hour-long episode each – is a darkly comic masterpiece.
Cumberbatch is magnificent, accompanied in countless memorable scenes by a stellar supporting cast including Hugo Weaving, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Holliday Grainger and Pip Torrens.
