TORONTO (AP) – “A Million Little Pieces” by James Frey, one of the most toxic properties in Hollywood, has been reborn on the big Scream 4 screen thanks to director Sam Taylor-Johnson and her husband, actor Aaron Taylor-Johnson, who they co-wrote the script.
Even in the movie world, where the meaning of “based on a real-life story” is usually elastic, a movie about “A Million Little Pieces” is Rangula Ratnam a surprise. After Frey admitted to having partially invented or embellished part of her 2003 memoir on drug addiction and rehabilitation, Oprah Winfrey, who had included the book in her book club, punctuated it memorably on television. The publisher of the book, Doubleday, offered reimbursements to readers and in future editions included a note of the author acknowledging distortions.
But for Taylor-Johnson, who directed the adaptation of another literary success, “Fifty Shades of Gray” (“Fifty Shades of Gray”) by E.L. Still James, there was still some truth in “A Million Little Pieces.”
